The Technology in Education..... My Experience

Ibu did mention to me that her ambition was to be a teacher. Unfortunately, because of her family’s financial condition, she cannot further her study. Inspired by ibu’s ambition and my sisters (angah & alang..) who involved in education as well, I know from the beginning that I will be a lecturer. Six years ago, I had been offered by KPTM to be a Finance lecturer (at Bangi campus). Alhamdulillah.. I had fulfilled my ambition at the age of twenty-five.

Involve in education line makes me aware with the rapid change of technology used in education, especially in term of physical facilities, hardware and applications. If you may recall, in early 1990s and 2000s, our teacher still using chalk (available in colourful version too..) and blackboard to teach. Their hand will become very dusty but they were still dedicated to carry out their responsibility. Ayah bought me and siblings the same set too at home but in smaller size so that we can use it for berangan.. eh, revision. Hehe. On that time, I did know about computer because ayah bought us one and sent me to computer class as well. Visiting library to finish homework, do revision and borrowing books (story book actually….) is a nice experience too.. It was the place where I assumed to be the most visited by clever and smart students.

During my diploma and bachelor, chalk and blackboard were no longer available. The lecturers (and teachers at school..) used marker and whiteboard to deliver their lectures, thus the problem of dusty hand (that claimed can affect health) solved! At that time, the main purpose for visiting library is to make a copy for the past final examination papers. I’d being introduced to the presentation by using PowerPoint slide and liquid-crystal display (LCD) projector. The first time I learnt about overhead projector (OHP) was when my angah prepared her Alat Bantu Mengajar (ABM). Then, I was very, very excited when I joint KPTM, I need to do the same things. The teaching materials need to be write or photostate on the transparency so that OHP projector can display it on screen. I photostate the same transparencies and distributed to my students as their notes.

Class for Bachelor (DBS) program at KPTM Bangi enhanced by LCD television too..

As the time goes by, KPTM Bangi upgraded the facilities to LCD projector, thus the transparency is no longer favorable. I started to type my notes but I never use PowerPoint slide since I taught calculation course (where switch on and off of LCD is not convenience). I required larger space to show the calculation during my lecture. So, I end up fully utilizing marker and whiteboard, while students referred to compilation of notes and exercises. Only on July 2015 semester, I used (I have to..) PowerPoint slide for the 1st time in my class since I was responsible for International Banking (FIN365) course that 100% was theory. There were sometime, I took an advantage by showing YouTube video in class. During the early semester, we sang The Climb by Miley Cyrus (to keep students positive..). 

In the middle of the semester, aaaaaa.... emmmm. Oppss! Well, I am utilizing the technologykn..? Hehehe..

Nowadays, students also did not have a problem to get past year question or to find material for research since everything is available online, known as digital library or digital repository (they are very lucky as compared to our zaman..). Students can log in by using ID and key-in password to access the knowledge management system. Currently, I have a privilege to access Perpustakaan Tun Abdul Razak,UiTM and DBS Library that allow me to easily ‘reach’ the super duper awesome database. I read an interesting research about Digital Libraries in Malaysia, conducted by Norasiah Haji Harun from Faculty of Information Management, UiTM. You might want to read the research too..

The use of technology (gadgets, applications etc…) in education is more than that. Even KPTM is slowly adopting the online learning method. According to What is OnlineLearning, it is the method of delivering educational information via the internet, and requires application like iTunes U, instead of in a physical classroom. KPTM is using Online Learning System (OLES), and since I’m teaching UiTM program, I also may use iCLASS Learning Management System by UiTM. The Benefits of Online Learning is worth to read. Emmmm… maybe I’m a conventional type of person (ni my younger brother said, En. Syg kata saya kuno…samala tu), I agreed that online learning is attractive especially for youngsters, however, I still believe that the existence of physical lecturer or teacher is a MUST for the learning session to become effective and meaningful. I have the opportunity to attend the training conducted by Dublin Business School (DBS) Ireland via Skype (that solve the distance issue….), and I can feel that ‘something is missing’, even the session is knowledge wise.

Oh ye.. Have you heard about SMART board before? KPTM Bangi has SMART board but only in one of the meeting room. The smart board actually is a type of interactive whiteboards that produced in 1990 by PARC (formerly known as Xeroc PARC) and SMART board being developed by the owner of SMART Company, David Martin. According to Chris Preston and Lee Mowbray in their research, SMART board is the whiteboard that displaying the image from the computer monitor with the surface operating as a giant touch screen. The screen can be touched by using finger or the electronic pens provided. SMART board, that supported by SMART Notebook software is said to improve pedagogy and student engagement in class. What do you think..? Ten Ways to get Smart with SMART Board provides detail on what SMART board can do. As compared to online learning, I definitely preferred this! Besides SMART board, I also learnt on how to use IEE scanner that the function just like LCD, but more lighter, portable and can connect to lappy, and the last device so far is Wacom Intuos, that is suitable to be used in lecture hall and...... also for the lecturer who like to write a lot (Aida must try!) Hehe..

Jadi.. I'm publishing a pretty simple post to share(Aida ngelat..). Sound simple, but I believe an amateur (yg baru nak berjinak-jinak dengan technology) like me will find this info valuable (well, I hope so…).

Downloading the attached document from email is something common in our daily business. I also preferred to safe keep all the important document virtually by sending it to my own email, or shared in Gmail Drive instead of keep it in pen drive or external hard disk. In my opinion, it is the safest way to backup my documents (= contingency). Do you have other suggestion...?

I learnt (for the 1st time) on how to download clip from YouTube when I need to do presentation for Managerial Economics (ECO740), the 4th course for my MBA, last May 2015. Previously, Kak Haiza is always the one who will ‘make up’ the presentation slide, and she was the one too, who teach me on how to download the clip. Terima kasih, Kak Haiza. Jasamu dikenang......hehe.

YouTube supported by several file formats, so, in order for us to download a clip / video, we need to have a converter so that the format will suitable for our lappy or personal computer (pc), or even smartphone. To readers who never download anything yet from YouTube, and you wish to do so.... I will share on how to do it.

There are a lots of converter available in the internet, so you just need to google and follow the steps as required. But, I’m using ClipConverter.

Part 2: Aida vs Technology

I’m baaaaaaaaack………..hehe. How are you? I hope you are fine by the grace of Allah…inshaAllah. For KPTM lecturer who teach UiTM program, the new semester will begin next week. BERUSAHA! And at the same time, kawan-kawan MBA UiTM (KPTM in-house program), we’ll start a new course, Managerial Decision Analysis (MGT780) on Friday, 4^th December 2015. Furthering study and working is not easy without support from people around us (T.E.R.I.M.A.K.A.S.I.H) and inner strength that we need. One of the surah that I like is Al-Fath (Kemenangan). Even, the 1^st verse itself will make me (and you..) feel very peaceful. Sesungguhnya Kami telah membuka bagi perjuanganmu satu jalan kemenangan yang jelas dan nyata (48:1). Subhanallah.....

Ok. As promised, I will continue with Part 2: Aida vs Technology. Let us recall together (budget best jekn..adehhh) my Part 1: Aida vs Technology post. I did mentioned about car, spectacles, mobile phone and online transaction. In this post, I will share more about my experience with technology, or technology that are close to me. Ayuh!

1) Watch

The accessory (the MOST ESSENTIAL one!) that I always need to wear. I feel incomplete without it. Ayah is the biggest influenced in this matter. In my family, whenever, we excel in our studies, he will reward us with a watch. As far as I remember, I had 3 watches. The 1st one was Disney with Snoopy picture that I wore for a very long time from primary to secondary school. The 2nd one was Titus and I started wearing it from my diploma until graduated with bachelor (both jam given by ayah tercinta.... Terima kasih, yah). Currently, I’m wearing Rado bought by En. Syg almost 3 years ago. My Titus watch still functioning but I didn’t change the faulty bracelet yet (I can't find it...Huhu.)

Setia ni.. either on my right wrist or left. 

The technology of watch is amazing too. A Brief History of Watches will share with you the watch's timeline that started in 1485. Do you know that horologist and watchmaker is currently interested with development of smartwatch..? According to Smartwatch, the companies like Apple, Pebble and Motorola offered smartwatch with features like connecting to the internet, making calls, messaging via text or video, checking caller ID, accessing stock and weather updates, offering GPS coordinates, location direction and many more. This technology is known as wearable computing device that offers functionality and capabilities similar to smartphone. Sound super cool... Anyone of you that have smartwatch and willing to share your experience with me..? Plssss.. Below clip for Moto 360 by Motorola. Cantik sangat..

2) Bluetooth Wireless Remote

This gadget was introduced by En. Syg recently. Whenever, we go for a holiday, he will bring tripod stand and this remote, for his convenience (especially...). Previously, without this remote, he need to set his handphone for 10 seconds, and quickly run to me to take our picture.

Bluetooth wireless remote is suitable for iPhone 5S/5C/5/4S/4, iPad 3/2, iPad mini, iPad with Retina display, iPod touch 4th generation or newer, and Android Smartphone and tablet PCs with Android 4.2.2 OS or above (Aida pening..). The most important use for this gadget is, it allows you to freely take pictures at a long distance. Nowadays, we can have bluetooth headphones, bluetooth speakers, bluetooth keyboards and many more. Please read What is Bluetooth Technology to understand about this technology that originally created by Ericsson in 1994. I admit that this gadget make En. Syg happy and grateful (xperlu lari-lari dah...). How about you..?

3) Comic

Suddenly, kn? Ya Allah, I am currently addicted to this. Hahaha... I like to read story book and my collection started when I was doing my diploma. However, due to the time constrain, I need to find alternative for my leisure time (yg sangatla limited ini....), since it took me about 15 minutes to finish reading (and berangan at the same time.....hehe).

I discovered a website discuss the history of comic strips that begun in 1827, and the earliest known comic book entitle The Adventures of Obadiah Oldbuck published in 1837. A very long time ago. Indeed, it was 188 years back! In Japan, comic book is referred as Manga. According to Early Origins of Japanese Comics, the earliest examples of pre-manga artwork that influenced the development of modern Japanese comics are commonly attributed to Toba Sojo, an 11th-century painter-priest with a whimsical sense of humor. Toba Sojo is the tradition of narrative art or telling stories with a series of sequential images that has been part of Japanese culture. My favourite comic known as shojo manga, or comics for girls (gegirl sangat....) where the characters will have big eyes and flowery backgrounds. Thanks to the technology that allows readers to read manga online at Read Manga online, for free! Yehuuuu!!!

End of Part 2: Aida vs Technology. I hope you’ll find the information will be useful to you too. For me, technology is beneficial for a better quality of life. It will enhance your productivity in daily responsibility and activity. An ignorance people like me will slowly appreciate it, soon or later.. Well, it is just about time. However, in my opinion the excessive use of high technology gadgets also (that is uncontrollable) will somehow violate the social interaction  that emphasize by Islam. Sabda Nabi s.a.w yang bermaksud: "Jika sekiranya seorang daripada kamu berjalan bersama saudaranya dengan tujuan memenuhi keperluannya (dan baginda menunjukkan isyarat dengan jari-jari baginda) amalan itu lebih utama dari ia beriktikaf selama 2 bulan di dalam masjidku”,  hadith riwayat al-Hakim. Part 1: Aida vs Technology

Wahhh, I have another 1 week for MIS750 (4 days to be specific). We had our test last Saturday, 21^st November 2015 and our final exam (assessment) will be held this coming Saturday, 28^th November 2015. All the best to kawan-kawan MBA UiTM (KPTM in-house program), TERUSKAN BERSEMANGAT!!! Honestly, I like the idea of reciting dua’ before we start the test just like we did last Saturday. After we strive for the best (dalam kesibukan untuk tanggungjawab yg lain….), to Allah jua we surrender.

Emmm. I want to share about my experience with technology, or technology that are close to me. Well, I did mention earlier that I am a technology illiterate. You’ll agree with me, I guarantee. Hehe..

1) Car

The technology of car started since 1886 when the first motor car was invented by Karl Benz. He was a mechanical engineer from Germany and the origins of Mercedes-Benz car was his! I found The History of Cars, that visualized car’s history in an interesting manner.

The first Malaysia car, named as Proton Saga was produced by Proton in 1985. Later, Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn. Bhd. (Perodua) was established in 1992 that focused on manufacturing of compact cars. In 2007, Perodua produced it 7^th model that was Viva. My Viva La Vida is using Dynamic Variable Valve Timing (DVVT) engines, the jointly develop technology by Toyota and Daihatsu. Based on my reading from the page of Perodua Viva Club (VIVAC), as posted by Hyuga, if driving Viva in a straight line, after reaching 3000rpm we can feel the car will move faster even if we didn't accelerate. It is because, the timing of the engine will activate because we want more power and it made the engine runs faster. But, when we don’t need extra power like driving in the city, the timing of the engine will be activated to limit the output power of the engine. That is the beauty of DVVT technology, a comprehensive engine control system that allows us to do things a lot better. For examples to overtake other cars faster and more safely, and less effort to climb hills. DVVT is also fuel economical and environmental friendly. Go greenla ni.. hehe. What does DVVT system do in your VIVA is interesting to read to...

2) Spectacles

I started wearing spectacles when I was 13. Since than, I have changed spectacle for 4 times, and the last time I did was 3 years ago. I never bought spectacles from other optical store except Focus Point (loyal sgt.....kn?).

According to Museum of Vision, the technology of spectacle believed to be started in Italy, between 1268 to 1289. Only later, when we were being introduced with contact-lens but you’ll be surprised by the fact that contact-lens were first manufactured in 1887! Since than, the rapid development of contact-lens technology resulted to the introduction of electronic contact lenses that could display information to the wearer and provide continuous medical monitoring. The post entitle Contact Lens Computer: Like Google Glass Without the Glassess provide details about the technology if you are interested.. Wahhhhhhh........ I am so impressed (ok, the 1st time I wore contact lenses was during my engagement, the last time I wore it was during my wedding receptions...I am not planning to wear it again...so far)!!!

Have you heard about Prof. Muhaya and her Lasik Centre...? Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) can be considered as the permanent alternatives to spectacles or contact lenses. The LASIK surgery, known as laser eye surgery or laser vision correction, is performed by using a laser or microkeratome to reshape the eye's cornea in order to improve visual acuity. In Malaysia, LASIK surgery offered by KPJ Center for Sight, Prince Court Medical Centre and Vista Eye Specialist (just to mentioned some..). Oooo, say NO to spectacles ye..? Tapi.. I always feel that those with spectacles looks genius. So, I’ll stick to that... Ehem!

3) Mobile phone.

Haaa... This device is litle bit lagendary. Hahaha! I bought my 1st mobile phone in 2002, Nokia 3330 and I used it for 10 years! It cost me about RM800 during that time. The network technology for Nokia 3330 is Global System for Mobile communications (GSM). GSM is a digital mobile telephony system that supports voice calls and data transfer speeds up to 9.6 kbps, together with the transmission of Short Message Service (SMS). ‘You have no space for a new message’ is the most common message appear on my Nokia 3330 screen. My most incredible experince with Nokia 3330, there was one time that the phone slipped from my hand. But.... I can still continue the conversation when I picked up the phone at the ground from level three. Hebatkan...?

Only in early 2012, I changed (kerana terpaksa kurelakan...hehe) to Samsung Galaxy Young when my Nokia 3330 was not functioning well anymore (that was the time when my ibu fallen ill too...). Samsung Young was introduced in October 2011 with the technology of GSM and HSPA. HSPA supports the very efficient provision of voice services in combination with mobile broadband data services. Based on my reading on Advantages and Disadvantages Samsung Galaxy Y, the end-user can expect to enjoy data throughout speeds of at least 1Mbps. Don’t be surprised that, Samsung Galaxy Young stays with me until now...... which currently having a problem to update WhatsApp. 'This version of WhatsApp became obsolete'..bla, bla, bla. Tapi bila nak update... 'This device doesn’t have enough space to download'.. bla, bla, bla. Haa.. Ni semua tanda-tanda la ni. Huhu.. Tp changing phone is definitely not my priority (at least not now....). Ok, bye!

4) Online Transaction

Until today.......

I never buy goods online.

I never book ticket online.

I never book hotel online.

The 1st time I did online banking transaction was in August 2015. Unbelievable? Believe it! And, that was only because I was married and En. Syg will send and fetch me everyday (can you see the restriction...?), well we just wanted to be home early after a tiring day of working. Do you know what is the 1st bank in Malaysia that provides online banking for customer convenience? Yesssss, you are absolutely right. It was Maybank, with the introduction of Maybank2u, back in 2000. You may read Maybank Launches Country's First Internet Financial Portal for better understanding about Maybank’s history on on-line financial portal. Currently, we have CIMB Clicks and Bank Islam Internet Banking (just to mentioned some..). I admit that online banking benefits me in term of settling my La Vida installment and other bills... Pantas dan tuntas, alhamdulillah....

Compression Ratio and Octane Chart

I bought my 1^st car (hehe.. kunun2nya not the last one since I admired sgt Porsche Cayenna S..) on 29th January 2009. Since then, I called her Viva La Vida or Wow Salina Fantastic (the plate number started with WSFkn...hehehe). My younger brother, Muizuddin influenced me to buy La Vida with the simple statement, “Ateh kajila kenapa Viva lagi mahal dari Saga…?”.

For this entry, I do not want to comment about Viva by Perodua vs. Saga by Proton, I know each model has its own preferred user, but I am interested to share about the suitable petrol needed to run my Viva La Vida (the fuel technology...). In Malaysia, the available petrol fuel is only RON95 and RON97. RON stands for ‘Research Octane Number’, the number that indicates its ability to resist knocking as it burns in the combustion chamber of engine. The higher RON indicates the higher octane in petrol, thus higher ability to resist the knock. Than you may ask, why is it important with that knock thing (I am not referring to Knock Knock by Elizabeth Tan yg En. Syg sy suka tu tau..haaa). Engine knock shows that fuel burn unevenly and will cause damaging to cylinder and piston in a long term. For further reading.. 3 Causes of Engine Knock

Higher RON indicates more power for engine? It is not necessarily. Interesting info that I just found, variant of fuel consumption is actually depending on the vehicle’s specification. In order to decide the best RON for our vehicles, we need to know its compression ratio (CR) that should be provided by dealer when you want to buy a car. Higher CR require higher octane in petrol.
